Giving to God : The Power of Tithing

Categories FaithPosted on

tithe is a one-tenth part of something, paid as a contribution to a religious organization or compulsory tax to a government. Today, tithes are typically voluntary and paid in cash, cheques, or stocks, whereas historically, tithes were required and paid in kind, such as agricultural products. Several European countries operate a formal process linked to the tax system allowing some churches to assess tithes.

Traditional Jewish law and practice have included various forms of tithing since ancient times. Orthodox Jews commonly practice ma’aser kesafim (tithing 10% of their income to charity). In modern Israel, Jews continue to follow the laws of agricultural tithing, e.g., ma’aser rishonterumat ma’aser, and ma’aser sheni. In Christianity, some interpretations of Biblical teachings conclude that although tithing was practiced extensively in the Old Testament, it was never practiced or taught within the first-century Church. Instead, the New Testament scriptures are seen as teaching the concept of “freewill offerings” as a means of supporting the church: 1 Corinthians 16:2, 2 Corinthians 9:7.

I usually hear people say tithing is not relevant for today, but I beg to differ through my personal experience. You see, a few years back, I was struggling financially, trying to make ends meet. Then one day, I came across a testimonial video from The 700 Club about tithing, and as I watched it, I decided that no matter what, I am going to tithe. I also remember the scripture which said God gives seed to the sower (Isaiah 55:10). So, I asked God to provide me with the seed, and you know what, someone had owed me a little bit of cash and that same night, they gave it to me. I smiled and offered it to God. From that day on, I continued to tithe. The amazing thing is, from that day until now, I never lacked financially.

In the video below, the doctor found himself in $500,000 debt and going bankrupt. Things looked hopeless until he tried some unique financial advice.

Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.  I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty. (Malachi 3:10-12)

If you are faced with financial challenges, start tithing because it will work for you too!..
